In junior high school, I was asked to write an essay about the person I most admired. It wasn't hard for me to choose. I didn't think of anyone famous, I wasn't drawn to a sports star or a movie sensation or even a popular singer. Immediately, I thought of a dear lady who has been a part of my life since birth. My Great Aunt M stood in as a surrogate grandmother. My mother's parents passed away before I was born, so her aunt and uncle blessed us and made us feel cared for every time we saw them. Aunt M is inspiring in so many ways. Over the years I have described her as "Martha Stewart meets Emily Post meets Beth Moore." She is the most gracious and gifted hostess, a woman of grace and class and she can teach the Word of God with passion and conviction. Many years ago, my Uncle S and Aunt M began working with a young man to build a mission in Tanzania, Africa. They actively shared the vision, raised support and helped to found "The City of Hope." When my uncle passed away, my aunt threw herself even deeper into this ministry. In her late seventies, she made annual trips into Tanzania, a grueling trip for even young people. She is now referred to as "Grandmother" by the 107 orphans who live at The City of Hope. Aunt M came to visit us today. She sat down at the table at my dad's house, surrounded by six of her ten great great nieces and nephews. My children have heard stories about this amazing lady, but today they were able to see her in person and experience the grace and poise that she possesses. She asked each one to share their name, age, grade in school, hobbies and interests. She wanted to get to know them as individuals. My three sons and my brother's three children shared with her and we learned new things about each one. We have aspiring veterinarians, sports lovers, science teachers and more in our midst!
Aunt M shared stories about The City of Hope, the children there and the work they do each day. Our children sat and listened, captivated by her tales.
Aunt M then asked each of the adults to share as well. My dad and his parents were there. She took time to remind us that there is one word that is not in God's vocabulary: "Outdated." God doesn't set us aside, nor does He expire our usefulness to Him or others. As long as we are alive and breathing, He has a plan and a purpose for us being here. Each day is a gift from Him and we need to make the most of what He's given to us. This was a powerful word to grasp. How blessed we are to have someone in our family who lives a legacy of faith. I pray that we will live our lives being faithful to God and the people He brings into our lives.
