Home Schooling...A New Chapter Begins

The first day, we didn't have B's computer set up, so he worked in my room...
C enjoying a math worksheet.
J with his math book.
The twins watch most of their lessons on a TV monitor, then I help them with the applications.
Brandt is now set up with his own computer, in the home school room.

A new chapter has begun. And with it, I am stepping out into the world of blogging. This is something I have resisted for a long time, but I see it as a means to stay in touch with friends near and far in a season when phone calls, lunches and dinner dates will be few and far between.

The chapter? Call it "HS 101." That's right, we are home schooling our boys. I always wanted to do this, but my husband wasn't too keen on the idea. I didn't fight it, especially because we were pretty content with the schooling they received at a local Christian school. Last fall, we were at a retreat with some dear friends and mentors who are veteran HSers. The topic came up and the man looked across the table at D and said "She would be great at HSing..." The ball began to roll. For the first time, D was open to the suggestion. We prayed, waited, prayed, waited...talked to other HS families, researched curriculum's, talked to the boys...Finally, in the early part of 2008, we made our decision.

We are three weeks into this adventure. I am tired. My brain hurts. My head aches. My whole body is screaming for a nap. But my spirit is light. My heart is happy. I see such peace and contentment on the boys' faces. There is very little or no bickering when they play together. Of course, during the school day we have plenty of heel dragging, glazed expressions and requests to "throw out this assignment" (which I can do if I think they have the concept down!). But when it's all said and done, we know that we know that we know, this is where we are meant to be. What a privilege to spend the best hours of each day with my boys. I get to hear B cheer "WOOHOO" when he conquers a difficult lesson. I see C light up when he turns in a beautifully written cursive assignment. My heart melts when I see J recognize a pattern on a paper that has nothing to do with...patterns! I am blessed.

I invite you to peak in from time to time, as your schedule allows. I think I will still keep a personal, hand written journal for all those things that are between "me and He." This will be a place to share the ups and downs of parenting, HSing, life in general. I pray that the things I share will encourage you and help us all to become more like Jesus. He is the reason we live and move and have our being...
